Family Therapy

Family Therapy: Our Approach

We approach family therapy by creating a space where each person can feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Sessions are guided in a way that helps conversations feel more manageable, giving families time to better understand one another and respond with more care and intention.

We work together to explore what’s been challenging, build on strengths, and find ways to support change in everyday interactions. Sessions are shaped around the needs of each family, with a focus on creating a space that feels supportive, collaborative, and meaningful for everyone involved.

Flexible and Tailored:

Family therapy offers flexible and tailored services to meet the unique needs of each family. Family therapy may include a combination of:

Family therapy sessions are 60 minutes in duration. The therapist will work with you to collaboratively develop goals and planning. The frequency will vary depending on your unique situation and goals.

Child/Youth Sessions

Providing a safe and supportive space for children and youth to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

Sessions may focus on topics such as managing emotions, building self-esteem, navigating school and interpersonal relationships.

Adult Child Sessions

Providing a space for adult children to explore family dynamics and the impact of early experiences on current relationships.

Sessions may include developing insight, navigating boundaries, improving communication, and working towards repair and connection with parents, siblings, or other family members.

Caregiver Sessions

Providing a supportive space for caregivers to reflect on their experiences, build on their strengths, and explore strategies to support their child or youth and overall family relationships.

Sessions may include understanding behaviour, supporting emotion regulation, strengthening connection, and navigating parenting or family challenges.

Family Sessions

Bringing family members together in a supportive space to strengthen communication, build understanding, and improve connection. Family sessions often build on the work done in child/youth and caregiver sessions, creating an opportunity to come together, share perspectives, and practice new skills in a supported environment.

Sessions may focus on improving communication, navigating challenges, strengthening relationships, and supporting overall family functioning. This approach helps ensure that each family member feels supported individually, while also working towards meaningful and lasting change as a family.

Family Therapy in the Perinatal Period

The perinatal period (pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenting) can bring a range of emotional and relational changes. Family therapy offers a supportive space for partners and/or extended family members to navigate this time together, helping families feel more connected, understood, and supported.

Sessions can focus on adjusting to new roles and responsibilities, navigating expectations, boundaries, and support needs, and strengthening communication and connection within the family.

Family therapy can also support families going through more complex experiences, such as fertility challenges, pregnancy complications, or perinatal loss. Sessions provide a safe and supportive space to process grief, stay connected and support one another through these experiences.
