Couples Therapy

Why Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is designed to help partners navigate relationship challenges, improve communication, and deepen their connection.
Grow Your Relationship With Couples Counselling:
Couples therapy at Anchor & Oak Counselling and Consulting utilizes evidence-based approaches to help partners improve the quality of their relationship.
The Gottman Method is an evidence-based, structured approach to help partners improve the quality of their relationship. With a focus on improving communication, increasing emotional connection, and managing conflict in a healthy and constructive way, couples are given specific tools and exercises to create a more secure and resilient relationship.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is an attachment-based approach that helps couples identify negative interaction cycles, explore the emotions and attachment needs beneath conflict, and strengthen emotional connection. EFCT helps couples understand what is happening beneath the surface and create new ways of reaching for and responding to one another.
Couples therapy provides a supportive environment to identify and explore unhelpful patterns such as defensiveness, withdrawal, and criticism. Through the therapeutic process, couples are supported in shifting these patterns and developing greater trust, emotional safety, understanding, and connection.
Whether couples are navigating recurring conflict, communication challenges, life transitions, parenting stress, emotional distance, or a desire to strengthen their relationship, therapy can provide the support and guidance needed to foster a healthier and more fulfilling partnership.

Couples Therapy Structure:
Couples counselling involves a combination of sessions where both partners are present with the therapist, and a minimum of one session where each partner attends individually.
Sessions with both partners in attendance may involve assessing areas of the relationship that are a strength, neutral, or weakness. Couples are provided support and tools in developing skills in expressing needs clearly, listening with empathy, and responding to one another with respect. Couples are given specific tools and skills to be practiced in session, and outside of session.
Individual sessions with the couples therapist may involve exploring previous relationship patterns, attachment styles, and family history. Individual sessions may also be used to further deep dive into challenges currently being experienced by one partner within the relationship.
Couples Therapy in the Perinatal Period:
Couple sessions may be helpful when couples are processing difficulties in fertility, the loss of a pregnancy or child together. Couples may also seek therapy together when there are relationship ruptures from a birthing or parenting experience, navigating and recovering in the postpartum period together.
Couples therapy can support managing parenting issues when approaches or parenting challenges are affecting their relationship.
Couples work can also help with challenges in identifying needs, navigating postpartum intimacy, mismatched desire levels, or sexual interest.
Sessions may also be helpful when an individual could benefit from having their partner present for support during vulnerable sessions or processing.
